Hand crafted by the Traditional Rigging Staff here at R&W Rope, a 25 fathom sounding lead line used by the USCG, Navy, Army, Merchant Marine and traditional vessels the world over.

Constructed of New England Rope’s 3 strand Vintage, a filament and spun polyester rope with very low stretch, tinsel strength of 6,200 lbs, hemp color and weights 7.3 lbs per 100 feet. This hand lead uses 1/2” diameter by 25 fathoms or 150 feet long. Marked by the fathom in the traditional manner with leather strips, colored rags and knots all sewn or spliced on to the line. A lead weight  of 7 lbs with a concave bottom for holding tallow or peanut butter in order to detect bottom material, is traditional spliced on the hand line. There is a short splice approximately 1 fathom from the bitter end eye to let your hand know you are nearing the end of the lead line. Bitter end has a tapered spliced 12” eye to drop over a cleat or bitt, so you don’t lose it overboard. You will not find a better made traditional hand lead line.

Options: Cast Lead Line weights are available in 2, 4, 7 and 14 lbs. A cast bronze weight of 4 lbs is available. Contact us for pricing with either of these options. We can also make Hand Lead lines to your specific requirements, please call for a quote or email captglover@rwrope.com
